A Festivus Miracle! (Facebook)

Well to my surprise it looks like my Facebook overlords have blessed me with the social inbox which means I have yet another email account to manage. ;-)

While it’s far from a Gmail killer, it definitely has killed off other email clients (like Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail, etc.) due to the fact it actually can defend me against spam.

For those wondering, yes I do have invites available (10 total) although I’m going to offer them to my Facebook friends first before giving it away to strangers.

Note: For those of you who don’t understand the Festivus miracle joke, you can click here for enlightenment. ;-)

Left Overs For Facebook

I think I’ve officially “resolved” the data portability drama with Facebook, and this post (more or less) will serve as my catharsis regarding my dispute with what I consider to be my biggest regrets in geek hood.

Vanity Of Vanities

When I joined Facebook many years ago, I did it for the sole purpose of forming closer relationships with friends I’ve met in person or communicated with extensively over email, twitter, blogs, etc.

I’ve never been fond of their chat programs, or even their spammy games like Farmville, Mafia wars, and the zillion clones that popped no matter how hard I tried filtering them out.

But I tolerated it because I wanted to connect with my friends as all of them were using it.

Until that is…

Rage Against The Machine

…Facebook decided to make everyone’s private profiles public.

Outraged, many of my friends threatened deletion (some actually did), while others abandoned Facebook altogether.

I debated against either option and still kept Facebooking on.

At least until I discovered that the social network lacked true data portability, which is geek speak for “all your contacts, images and videos belong to Facebook!”

Exodus And The Digital Death

I quickly discovered that all of the legal ways of removing your data off of Facebook’s servers were “mysteriously” not working, after becoming too popular.

After trying dozens of services (freemium, premium and free) to legally export my data off of Facebook’s servers for safe keeping (at least according to their API), I became frustrated and almost deleted my account (I actually found the one click button after a long search).

A wiser friend talked me out of doing that (30 seconds before I was going to click the button too), so instead I removed 99% of my personal data from the site & temporarily disconnected every service from Facebook (which pissed off my friend, hence this long post).

The Back Door

Later on my friend kept bugging me on when I would return to Facebook (as I had already deleted the app off of my iPhone) which I replied “when they allow me to export my images off site” (I had already given up on videos being exported).

I later agreed I would return if I could export my images off site.

After an hour of us Googling, we discovered a WordPress plugin that Facebook “broke,” but the author had figured out a way to download our images in high quality (you can contact me for more info regarding the plugin as I’m not sure how long it will remain functional).

The plugin worked like a charm and now I have all of my images on my own server. :-)

Left Overs For Facebook

After this whole dilemma my trust of Facebook is at a all time low, and while I did rejoin the Facecult, I’m no longer uploading my primary data (images, videos, etc.) to the site, but instead will push data to Facebook from other platforms (so my friend can stop bugging me).

I purchased a Flickr premium account to host my images and short videos, while YouTube will host the longer ones over 90 seconds.

My private Twitter account will update my statices while Tumblr will fill in the gap.

As far as social goes, I’m now becoming a more active member of iRovr, which has a hyper active community (I’ll post my thoughts about them later).

So while Facebook will still be able to collect info regarding my geek habits (unless I’m on iRovr), they will no longer be privileged to receive primary access to my data (key words are “my data”), but instead view them through the lens of rival third party clients.

Farewell Facebook

It took some time, but I finished removing Facebook from every blogging site, social network, reference page, etc.

The site was becoming too spammy for my taste, and was turning into gossip central.

I actually thought about deleting my account…

…buy my siblings (& their kids) would haunt me to the grave if I did that.

So instead I’ll no longer use it and cast it aside like I did MySpace earlier.

I’m now using About Me as my central hub for everything, which you can check out at about.me/Darnell (note: it’s still in Alpha mode).

For those wondering where I’ll post entries to my private life, you can subscribe to @DarnellClayton or visit flic.kr/DarnellClayton for photos & short videos (most which will be private).

Note: Unlike last time, many of my friends have deleted their accounts or have stopped using the service, so saying goodbye to Facebook is now much easier. :-)

Fasting From Facebook (For Forty Days)

To the shock of some of my friends, I’ll be fasting from Facebook for the next 40 days (if not indefinately).

My reason for leaving Facebook has nothing to do with the privacy fiasco, nor is it related to the inability to export my data offsite (if you have no idea what I’m talking about, rejoice! You’re not a geek).

Rather Facebook has (to put it bluntly) become a one stop vanity shop, creating no inherit value whatsoever in my life.

Unlike Twitter (which enlightens me), Tumblr (which encourages me), YouTube (which entertains me) and WordPress (which is just plain awesome!), I can not find any inherit value in Facebook that makes it worth investing time into.

So starting tomorrow (May 30th) I’ll be disconnecting my entire life from Facebook for at least 40 days (if not forever).

I’ve already turned off all notifications so if you need to contact me my Gmail is DarnellClayton and my tweet account is @Darnell (Skype is HiddenNook).

We Need A "Do Not Facebook Me" List

I love my Facebook friends, but I hate the zillions of apps that they play–or rather the ones that keep appearing on their wall.

I originally joined Facebook in order to see the latest status updates, videos and photos of my friends, frenemies and fellow geeks from various times zones around the world.

Now all I see is people growing virtual plants they can not eat, flying fighter planes they can not afford or embezzling money in cyberspace because they’re too afraid to do it in real life (note: the last part is a GOOD thing!).

While I think joining games like Farmville, Mafia wars and those apps claiming to speak for the Almighty to be silly, I’m getting tired of hiding these items from my wall (as it seems people keep finding various clones of the above mentioned games).

In order to keep my sanity, Facebook needs to create I’m a “Do Not Facebook Me” list, similar to the Do Not Call list created by Uncle Sam.

Even if this was a premium feature (say between $1-$5 per month), this would be worth it, as it would clear Facebook of the noise that often plagues the social network (at least for non-gaming geeks like me).

Will Facebook do this? I don’t know, but right now I’m looking for alternative hangouts. (hint: Twitter and Google Buzz)

I'm (slowly) Moving My Life Off Of Google's Servers

bartsimpson

I love Google! I really do! Never has one company had so much impact upon my life (for the positive) and I doubt I’ll find another that will.

So why am I migrating away?

Answer: it isn’t wise for me to put all of my eggs in one basket.

On the rare occasions when Google was down/inaccessable, 90% of my geek life suffered sending me into nerd panic mode.

After much internal debate I have been slowly moving my life off of Google’s servers & choosing alternatives.

Here is my list thus far (with reasons to boot):

Blogger.com –> WordPress (self hosted)
• Reason: wanted anti-spam comment protection minus the word puzzles. Also plugins & pages were a plus.

Picasa Web Albums –> Facebook
• Reason: Much more interaction with friends, plus the fact that Facebook is much more mobile friendly (at least for the iPhone, Blackberry & Palm Pre).

Google Voice –> Skype
• Reason: Skype is an actual stand alone phone service, where Google Voice just rediects. Both are cool though!

Google Checkout –> PayPal
• Reason: PayPal is a lot more flexible. & I like their guarentees better.

Picasa (Destop Software) –> Paint.NET
• Reason: Paint.NET has a lot more features. Microsoft really needs to hire this guy.

That is it thus far, but I am going to be seeking out more alternatives (as the competition has drastically improved in the last few years).

Other Google services I’ll probably never leave (like YouTube, Gmail, Google Chrome, Google Reader, Google Earth, Google Calendar, Google Analytics, AdSense, Google News, etc.) while others I might consider (replacing Google Docs with Zoho, & Google Search with Bing).

And for you Android fans out there, I’m probably not going to use those phones (& before you whine about openess, the iPhone is only a jailbreak away).

If anyone has other suggestions for Google alternatives, feel free to let me know in the comment section below.
